New Order is a British electronic and alternative rock band formed in 1980 in Manchester. It emerged from the ashes of Joy Division after the suicide of their lead singer, Ian Curtis. The remaining members—Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Peter Hook (bass), Stephen Morris (drums, keyboards), and later Gillian Gilbert (keyboards, guitar)—adopted an innovative style combining post-punk rock and electronic music, marking a major turning point in the music scene of the 1980s and 1990s.
The band is widely recognized for its iconic tracks, particularly “Blue Monday” (1983), which remains the best-selling 12-inch single of all time. Their unique fusion of synthesizers, electronic beats, and melancholic guitars has influenced generations of artists and defined the sound of new wave and dance rock.
